Gainesville, FL (May 12, 2013)- The Hurricane Junior Golf tour traveled to Gainesville, FL for the second time in 2013. The event was the College Prep Series at UF and the tournament was held at the University of Florida Golf Course. This was the fifth tournament of the college prep series which gives junior golfers the opportunity to play at division one golf courses around the Southeast. The weather could not have been better for this great event with highs in the 80s and mostly sunny skies for both days. There was a lot at stake for the competitors in the event including four AJGA performance stars for the winners of both the girl’s and boy’s 15-18 divisions. Winners of all four divisions receive an automatic bid to the 2013 Tour Championship and Florida Tour exemptions were given to the winners of all both older division winners and the boy’s 11-14 division winner. Points towards year-end honors including All-HJGT Teams and the Hurricane Cup were awarded to the top 15 competitors in each division instead of the top ten because this was a college prep series event.

The boy’s 15-18 division featured a great battle between the three golfers in the final pairing with Gary Daoust making par on each of the last seven holes to seal the victory. Daoust finished at one over par for the tournament after shooting 70-71 on the par 70 course over the two days. Daoust was in the top five in his division in both birdies and pars shooting five and 25, respectively over the two days. Daoust did most of his damage on par fives where his 4.50 average was a sixth of a stroke better than any of his competitors. Finishing in second place was Chandler Blanchet who was tied for the lead going into day two but finished one shot behind Daoust after his day two 72. Blanchet had 24 pars and four birdies over the two days. Blanchet was most impressive on par threes where his 2.90 average was better than anybody else in the field. Frequent HJGT top finisher, Jack Comstock, took home third place after shooting 71-72 for the tournament. Comstock had the most pars in the division with 27.

Girl’s 15-18 division day one co-leader Daniella Casteneda ran away from the competition on day two and won by six strokes. Casteneda was extremely consistent over the two days shooting 73-73 to finish at six shots over par. Casteneda was the leader in several major categories including most birdies and most pars with five and 21, respectively. Casteneda had the best average scores on both par threes and par fives with 2.90 and 5.00 averages, respectively. Five time HJGT top-ten finisher Katie Holt took home second place. Holt was tied for the lead after a day one 73 before her day two 79 left her six shots out of first place. Holt showed her consistency with nothing worse than a bogey in the event. Holt was most impressive on par fours where her 4.30 average was the best in the division. Navika Kuchakella was extremely consistent over the two days shooting a 78-77 to finish three shots back of second place.

Ray Navis won the boy’s 11-14 division for the second time in three weeks after shooting 74-75 for the tournament. Navis held off his two playing competitors by limiting his bogeys throughout the second day, finishing with only four. Navis had the most pars in the division with 23 and had the second most birdies with a total of three. Navis separated himself from his competitors by averaging par on both par threes and par fives throughout the two days. Regan Shi and Hao Hua Zhang, both natives of China, finished in second and third place, respective. Shi finished one shot ahead of Hao Hua over the two days. Shi tied for the most birdies in the division with four. Zhang tied for the most pars in the division with 23.

Alyssa Lamoureux won her third tournament of the year in the girl’s 11-14 division by shooting an impressive five over par for the event. Lamoureux was able to maintain focus despite leading her competitors by at least ten strokes throughout most of day two. Lamoureux led her division in every major category including most pars and birdies and best average performance on par threes, fours, and fives. Carlye Moore came in second place with a very consistent two day effort including an 80 on day one and an 81 on day two. Moore was second in the division with a total of three birdies. Kaysie Harrelson was also extremely consistent over the two days shooting an 82-83. Harrelson had the second most pars in the division with 18.

Sevierville, TN (May 5, 2013) – Last weekend’s event in Hixson Tennessee marked the first ever rain-out in the five year tenure of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour. This weekend players and spectators seemed equally skeptical as to whether or not two rounds would be played in Sevierville, TN. The event this past weekend was the Tennessee Spring Challenge, hosted by the Sevierville golf club. Certainly one of the more challenging courses on the 2013 schedule, the Sevierville Golf Club features very firm, fast, and unforgiving greens. The course is laden with lateral hazards and water is present in some fashion on nearly all holes of the championship caliber River Course. Fortunately the heavy rain bands that were thought to wreak havoc on the town located just east of Knoxville were broken up when they reached the Smokey Mountains and decimated into mild rain. The event was ranked by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard, one of the premiere ranking systems for junior golfers in the nation. At stake for this event was an automatic bid into the 2013 tour championship, which was granted to each division winner. Top ten finishers received numerous honors including valuable points toward state teams, all HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup. Scouts were present at the event from National Scouting Report to help provide insight to junior’s in the many ways to play golf at the collegiate level.

The boy’s 15-18 age division produced a great day of competitive golf from the final pairing. Zach Smith (+15) of Mt. Sterling, KY, Benjamin Huskey (+18) of Sevierville, TN, and Harris Dodson (+24) of Knoxville, TN, who placed first second and third respectively, were all playing together in Sunday’s final pairing. Smith who finished first led the division in 5 of the 7 major statistical categories. Smith led with 5 birdies, and a par or better percentage of 61.1%. Smith started the round Sunday in magnificent fashion chipping in on three consecutive holes (2, 3, and 4) to shoot birdie, par, and birdie again. Coming off the division leading 78 on day one Benjamin Huskey was not able to emulate his round one performance in Sunday’s rain. Huskey shot an 84 to finish the event +18. Huskey’s greatest 9-hole stretch came on the back nine Saturday where he managed an astonishing two over, shooting seven pars and just two bogeys on holes 11 and 18. Harris Dodson rounded out the top three from the boy’s 15-18 division. Dodson did his best work on par fours where he maintained an average of 4.60, second best in the division.

The girl’s 15-18 division yielded a few great performances in the top three. Familiar face to the HJGT top three was Katie Bishop (+23) of Cleveland, TN who finished ahead of High School Golf teammates Eliza Hudson (+27) of Mauckport, IN and Morgan Stanley (+37) of Georgetown, IN. The two teammates finished the event in second and third. Bishop, who was in the lead by a stroke to start the day faltered on the front nine to lose the lead for a short period of time only to make her comeback and secure the win shooting two over on the back nine. Bishop performed significantly well on par fives with an average just a half stroke over par at 5.50. Bishop tied the division lead for pars with Eliza Hudson accumulating 15 total. Bishop also led the division with 2 birdies. Placing in second was Indiana native Eliza Hudson who performed significantly well on the course’s par threes. Hudson shot an immaculate average of 3.25, just ¼ of a stroke over par. Hudson gained three strokes from Saturday to Sunday to push her out of the lead, this was likely in part to the rainfall throughout the round. In third place was Hudson’s high school teammate and fellow Indiana native Morgan Stanley. Stanley’s most notable statistic was her 10 pars through the two rounds of play.

The most impressive play this weekend came from the boy’s 11-14 age division. Devout Ohio State fan Micah Knisley (+14), who resides in Jefferson City, TN revealed the lowest two day total from any age division this weekend. Knisley came out Saturday firing the second best score in the division at 82. Knisley showed up day two determined to secure the victory and shot a tournament low 76 to solidify first place. Knisley’s low score was aided by a score of one under on the back nine Sunday, shooting six pars, 2 birdies, and one bogey. Knisley managed the division lead in birdies (3), pars (19), and the lowest average on par fives with a 5.12 average. Finishing in second was JonErik Alford (+18) of Roswell, GA. Alford shot rounds of 84-78. Alike Knisley, Alford performed extremely well through the demanding elements Sunday shooting even par on the back nine Sunday which was proven by seven pars, one birdie, and one bogey. Davis Kirk of Dalton, GA slid into the top three with an impressive 78 on Sunday to finish the tournament +20. Kirk tied the division leading average of 3.25 on the courses par threes.

The smallest division of the weekend was the girl’s 11-14 division. Katelyn Skiffen of Chatsworth, GA finished in first place. Skiffen shot a total of eight pars. Skiffen played well on par threes shooting a 3.88 average. Kennedy Anne Noe of Knoxville, TN placed second in the division. Noe led the division on par fours with a 5.60 average. She tailed her competitor Skiffen by a mere two pars in the division to finish with 6 total.

The event was played at the Phoenix Golf Links in Grove City, Ohio. Since this was a Major Championship players were allowed to use caddies for the third time this season. The links style course presented an unusual challenge to players for this weekend’s tournament which led to higher scores on day one. The weather for the tournament was as good as we could have asked for in Ohio during early May. Both Saturday and Sunday were in the low 70’s with very few clouds in the sky. The Junior Golf Scoreboard ranked this event and the winners of all four divisions received automatic bids to the 2013 Tour Championship. HJGT points were also earned which will go towards year-end honors including All-HJGT Teams and the Hurricane Cup.

Frequent top ten HJGT finisher Zach Hoskins pulled off his first victory of the season in the boy’s 15-18 age division. Hoskins was extremely consistent over the two days shooting an impressive 76-75 (151) for a two-stroke victory. Hoskins secured his two stroke victory by sinking a 6-foot birdie putt on the challenging 18th hole. Hoskins led the division in most pars with 23. Hoskins was most impressive on par threes where his 3.00 average was a quarter of a stroke better than anybody else in the division. Luke Campbell took home second place after finishing with a two-day total of 78-75 (153). Campbell led the division in Par 4 Performance (4.20) and had the most birdies in the field with five. Third place was captured by Zach Zediker with scores of 77-78 (155). Zediker, winner of the first Nike Cup Series event, fired a 37 on the back nine Sunday to secure his third place finish.

Jaclyn Fanola of Monroe, MI won the girl’s 15-18 age division by 5 shots after posting impressive scores of 83-77 (160) on the difficult course. Fanola dominated the division in most major categories including most pars (17), Par 4 Performance (4.50) and Par 5 performance (5.25). Fanola’s par four-performance was a quarter of a stroke better than second place finisher Emily Hughes which helped propel Fanola to victory. Hughes improved greatly from her first day total and came away with second place after shooting 88-77 (165). Hughes led the division in Par 3 Performance (3.12) and also had the second most birdies in the division with three.. Third place was won by Jenna McGuire, who shot 89-83 (172). Petzak was the division leader in all statistical categories including most birdies (1), most pars (22) and Par 5 Performance (5.00). This was Petzak’s third top four finish of the young 2013 season. Coming in second place was Noah Zediker who shot a two day total of 81-91 (172). Zediker also had one birdie and had the lowest score after day one before a few rough holes on day two derailed his chance at victory. Third place belongs to Ohio native Kyle McCafferty with scores of 96-87 (183). McCafferty shot an impressive nine pars over the two day tournament.

Sabrina Hoskins from Orlando, FL won her eighth tournament this year in the 11-14 year old girls.
