Myrtle Beach Jr. Challenge Highlights

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (September 29th and 30th) -The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Myrtle Beach this weekend to once again host the Myrtle Beach Junior Challenge at the prestigious Myrtle Beach National West Course.  With 50 junior golfers from South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and even Mexico, competition was stiff during the two days of play as players were competing for South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage Points, National Junior Golf Scoreboard Points, as well as HJGT points towards year end honors.  In fact, three of the four divisions were decided by two strokes or less with the Girl’s 15-18 division coming down to an exciting one hole playoff.  Throughout the weekend, weather was gloomy with temperatures remaining in the low to mid 70′s.

In the Boy’s 15-18 Division, Gonzalo Martinez of Mexico placed in first with a two day score of 139 (-5).  Martinez, who studies at the Greg Norman Academy in Myrtle Beach, was closely contested by Zach McLain of Gilbert, SC, who came in second with a two day total of 141 (-3).  What set Martinez apart from McLain and the rest of the field, however, was his five consecutive birdies made early on in the second day of play as well as his impressive performance in the Par 4 Performance Challenge.  Coming in a tie for third, was Gustavo Arizpe, Emilio Flores, and Anthony Gardner, all of the Greg Norman Academy, as well as Zach Boe of Myrtle Beach, SC.  Arizpe, Flores, Gardner, and Boe, stayed on the heels of the first and second place competitors all throughout the tournament by shooting a two day score of 142 (-2).  One other notable competitor in the Boy’s 15-18 Division was Connor Bosek of Charlotte, NC, who sank the only eagle of entire tournament.

Annabelle Dallery of Sumter, SC won the Girl’s 15-18 Division.  In what may have been one of the more exciting divisions of the day, Dallery was forced into a one hole playoff with Marisa Daguil-Kawabe of Fayetteville, NC with Dallery ultimately coming out on top.  In the two day’s of competition, both Dallery and Daguil-Kawabe shot a grand total of 164 (+20) with Dallery winning the one hole playoff.  In addition to winning her field, Dallery also won the Par 3 and Par 5 Performance Challenges.  Rounding out the top three for the Girl’s 15-18 Division was Cameron Crutchfield of Myrtle Beach, SC.  Crutchfield, who also won the Golf Pride Most Improved Golfer, shot a two day total of 176 (+32).

In the Boy’s 11-14 Division, Jamie Wilson of Mount Pleasant, SC came out on top.  Wilson, who also won the Par 3 and Par 5 Performance Challenges, finished the tournament with a total score of 142 (-2), in addition to sinking the most birdies in his division.  Following close behind Wilson was Kohler Karavan of Myrtle Beach, SC.  Karavan’s two day total was 144 (E) which helped him win the Par 4 Performance Challenge.  Finishing in third for the Boys 11-14 Division was Vijay Mishra of North Myrtle Beach, SC.  Mishra, who recently won the Carolina Fall Challenge at Deerbrook, finished with a total score of 149 (+5).

Coming in first for the Girl’s 11-14 Division was Madison Elliott of North Myrtle Beach, SC.  Elliott shot a two day total of 161 (+17) and also won the Par 5 Performance Challenge.  Coming in second for this division was Miranda Russell of Myrtle Beach, SC.  Russell shot a grand total of 181 (+37), and also had the second most pars for her division, sinking eight par shots.
